We are in our 5th week in the study of 1 Corinthians All are welcome to join us in this 10week study. Reading ahead is helpful. We will cover chapters 89. The title is Eating Meat Offered to Idols Versus Love of Neighbor. This topic may seem strange to us in our day, but it really has to do with how people are influenced by others such as those that are rich and those who we think are wise and knowledgeable about topics. The Corinthians pridefully thought of themselves as mature and possessing high spiritual knowledge and wisdom. They felt that since they knew the pagan worship was false and that the pagan idols were not true gods, there should be no problem in eating some of the meat that was offered in the pagan temple. Additionally, since the pagan worship is false, they reasoned that the meat offered is really no different than any other meat. Paul is concerned that some with weaker consciences may see and imitate the Christians who are eating meat at the pagan temples and that they would fall back into familiar practices and enter into pagan worship. Thus the actions of those possessing knowledge may become an occasion of sin for weaker members in the community. We meet on Thursdays at 9:00 am and 5:30 pm. Beginning Feb. 15 (Monday) the evening session will meet on Monday evenings at 5:30 due to our programs for Lent beginning on Thursday evenings on Feb. 18. FORMED.org is a reality!! Thank you to all of those people that made our parish subscription possible. We are up and running as of February 8. Instructions to get started are on the attached insert! All are welcome to join us on Tuesdays or watch from home on any computer, Android or IOS phone. Call the ofice if you have questions! 7154231251.. People drive up, but cannot get out of their cars, and the box of food is loaded into their trunk. This is in addition to SWEPS and the Neighborhood Table. All volunteers wear masks and maintain social distancing. Contact for volunteering is Dale Bitkowski. His email is: bikowski@wctc.net Many of his volunteers are snowbirds and have gone south for the winter, so he could use volunteers. Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Ann 699 Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 11:00 am: St Peter & Paul Church basement. Meeting and lunch will be served. RSVP to Darlene Stanislawski by. Thursday, Feb 18th at 7154241883. February 14, 2021 by: Fr. Levi Schmitt Repent and believe in the Gospel. The priest or deacon says these words as he signs or sprinkles the blessed ashes upon us on Ash Wednesday. The invitation to repentance, to an interior transformation, is at the core of the Lenten journey. One of the ways that this invitation reaches into our hearts, though, is through the externals of what we do. The Church traditionally has highlighted three practices: Prayer, fasting and charity, or almsgiving. Regarding the second of these, fasting, the Church has the following as a precept: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. It is important, however, to personalize the Lenten experience to deepen repentance. Taking on a penance should always be done under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to keep the doing from getting in the way of true transformation. Below are a couple of ideas in each of the three categories. Charity: Prayer: Penance: Write a note/ text of gratitude/ encouragement Attend the parish s Lenten conferences Go to confession Donate to a charitable organization Volunteer Visit someone or invite someone to Mass or confession Do the house chores before anyone else Forgive someone Pray for a particular person for 40 days Pray the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy or the Stations of the Cross Attend one daily Mass during the week Pray with Scripture Make a five minute daily visit to the Church Make 15 minutes of prayers a day Attend all of the Holy Week liturgies Give up meat, condiments, snacks, sweets or a favorite drink. Speak less, avoid gossip Regular exercise, cold showers Cut out/down music and screen time; give up sports, the news, 30 minutes of TV Attend an earlier Sunday Mass No snooze button, drive the speed limit or give up unnecessary purchases
